Arts Week 2011 by Lily

Last week was Holy Apostles’ arts week, when we have a whole week packed with fun arts activities and projects. Then at the end of the week every class picks a piece of art work from each pupil, and we have a gallery where the whole school, including parents, are welcome to inspect our art work. The year’s art week had a particular theme, Africa.

On the first day we worked on our pencil skills then did something called Kulchalee which is telling a story but with instruments including, drums and shakers. The man who was leading the session got some of us as volunteers and got us to dress up as animals! Every one really enjoyed themselves.

Then on Tuesday Jo came in to do something called batik with us. This is using a canvas, hot wax and ink to create a painting which has an affect of a stained glass window. Then we researched adinkra, which is a block of pattern, usually with symbols each with a particular meaning, which is then covered in ink and used to decorate clothes and materials.

Next on Wednesday we spent the whole day decorating and painting African shields with Phil. Each shield is usually decorated with symbols which have a meaning to the owner.

On Thursday we looked at the work of Afewerk Tekle and in particular one of his paintings where he paints the scene of Queen Solomon meeting Queen Sheba. We were split into groups of two or three and each group was assigned a piece of the
painting and had to recreate it. At the end we had to put all the pieces back together to complete the painting. It didn’t turn out too well but every one enjoyed seeing the finished project.

Finally on Friday everyone spent the day finishing off half done projects and setting up for the gallery. It was another successful, brilliant arts week and one we will all remember.
